Start by buying cheap Greatest Hits albums by well known people and with those you can decide if you’d like to buy other albums by them.

Those are some of my FAVORITES! A little bit of all rock. Soft, classic, modern all the good stuff! Hope you like some of them! You should be able to listen to most of it on youtube or the itunes store!

Sounds good so far, especially the John Fogerty. Be sure to get some of his stuff with Creedence Clearwater Revival.
I’ll list some stuff that I really love. Some of this music has seriously influenced me. In not much of an order:

To that, I’d definitely add the Rolling Stones; they’ve made some really awesome, influential music and they’re a must-have. I’d also recommend Johnny Cash as well as Bob Dylan. The Clash and the Ramones both have really good punky stuff that isn’t too hardcore. Iggy and The Stooges are heavier, but they really have ENERGY. The Doors are really good too. Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin are also both real good (Zepp is usually less heavy than Sabbath). Of course, there’s always the Beatles; I usually like the Rolling Stones more, but the Beatles have a lot of really good stuff. Then, if you’re in for an interesting, mind-opening twist, there’s Frank Zappa (and his first band The Mothers of Invention). Zappa is really my fave. :)

With this kinda stuff, I think it’s usually ok to go for some “Greatest Hits” kinda albums as a starting-point to give you an idea of what the band is like. Careful though, not all Greatest Hits-type things are good, some are kinda aweful.

If you have any questions about what albums/songs to get by these artists or want more advice (even if it’s to say “that stuff was crap, got anything else?”) feel free to email me! :)

I love the website Allmusic, it can be a great guide.
You can explore by genre and it will give you artists of that genre, similar artists, and the most popular albums of the genre.

Here is the page for rock

You can explore different genres and artists.
I am not too into classic rock, but I do like Pearl Jam.
Good luck with your music collection.
